Handel’s “Zadok the priest” is a fairly well known item and has more than one use; for example in football and a wedding. If you listen to where the choir comes in it may sound familiar?

The Bible does not contain the word "Christmas". (That is also true for some of the traditional "seasonal" representations, including the dating.) So, why this post? I examine New Testament (NT) statements that actually do relate to Jesus coming into our world the first time.

Jesus: The Name

Why was the Bethlehem baby named .......s? Was it a family name? Where do we get the word "Jesus"?

Jesus: the world [Edn 2]

Introduction*

Jesus answered (the Governor), “My kingdom does not belong to this world. If my kingdom belonged to this world, my followers would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here” (John 18:36, NRSVUE) 

Jesus: All four say..

The four Gospels devote a considerable amount of space to Jesus’ final week, and the resurrection day. Following is a compilation extracted from information limited to that found in all of the accounts.

Jesus: Lifted Up (v.2)

I wonder how the original hearers reacted when they heard Jesus say this:

Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him (John 3:14-15, CEV).

Jesus: is the Good News

The Birth of Christ story gives a prominence to some men on watch who had a fright one night, which turned out to be really something, something beyond, imagining...

Jesus: Followed; and UNfollowed

 There was a time when the numbers were noticeably growing, and then they weren't.

A field-preacher named John (the baptiser) had started the upheaval. He was the "warm up". Jesus was the point of the moment. Jesus returned to Galilee with the power of the Spirit. News about him spread everywhere. He taught in the Jewish synagogues, and everyone praised him. (Luke 4:14-15, CEV). Jesus had connected with John down in Judea. He went back to Galilee to increasing popular notice, to crowds assembling, to excitement.

Jesus: and the disillusioned

A five loaves and two fish episode evidently made an impact! It is one of the few pericopes reported (variously) by all four of the Gospels.

 

At the common climactic point a small (child’s?) meal is being consumed by a huge company.

John makes it very clear this was a critical moment for the "general public" of that time and place. (To this I return below.)

Jesus: the WHY

Why did Jesus come into our world, then?

JESUS: According to __

"According to...." : or, "Jesus, according to ......". The noun that follows can be problematic! Large implications in the answer. It is a big question and I aim to do it some justice, albeit briefly. 

Questions, Mary's, etc

When we first meet Mary, mother of Jesus, she had questions, spoken or (assumed) unspoken.

Joseph, Mary & Jesus; Bethlehem, etc

We find Jesus' birth and infancy firmly connected to Bethlehem in Judea

News, Good, THE

For some, the Christmas story is "Good News".

Paul knows the meaning of Jesus’ saving crucifixion. He is very clear about him, the one who saves all who will.

Salvation

"Salvation" is a fairly common word in English Bibles (ie, translations).
